What is Guangdong like in the eyes of the world’s most excellent photographers? This Saturday (February 15), GDToday is about to launch “Discovering China Together: Photography Exhibition by Renowned American Photographers in Guangdong” at Canton Place in Guangzhou.
The exhibition showcases Guangdong with 42 photographs taken by four award-winning US photojournalists: Pulitzer Prize winners Nick Ut, Ringo Chiu, Irfan Khan, and World Press Photo honoree Michael Nelson.
In November 2024, they were invited by GDToday to capture the province’s landscapes, food and people with their cameras. From the remote Yao folk villages nestled in the mountains to the lively streets of bustling cities, from the smiles of people to the golden hues of sunset, their photos represent a lively and diverse Guangdong.

Before the exhibition in Guangzhou, a collection of photos from their trip was exhibited in Orange County, California in the US, and attracted an estimated 500,000 visitors.

“We always associate China with its Great Wall, history, and art, but this exhibition offered a more human and everyday perspective, taking me into China in a way that felt like a complete experience, as if I had seen the smiles of people and been part of their festive celebrations myself,” Mona Sherif, a visitor of the exhibition in California, said.
“There’s just such a great variety of images there, so much color, so much diversity, and so many adventures and experiences in Guangdong in the photos,” Michael Nelson recommended the exhibition to visitors in Guangzhou.
Organized by GDToday and supported by Canton Place and InterCulture, the exhibition will join the InterCultural Day 2025, an annual event in Guangzhou that celebrates the city’s cultural diversity through a lively display of performances, art and traditions from different countries.
While the exhibition runs from February 15 to 24, visitors on February 15 can also participate in additional events and performances hosted by other contributors to Intercultural Day 2025. Please see the full list of events and performances below.
