作为我国珍贵的民间传统手工艺
已有近百年的历史
China boasts a long‑standing tradition of doll‑making crafts. However, cotton sculptures are distinct from ordinary dolls. This precious folk handicraft dates back nearly a hundred years.
棉塑以棉花造型为基础
结合手工缝制、刺绣、绘染等
多道复杂工序
形成具有柔和质感的立体艺术品
Based on cotton‑based shaping, cotton sculpture integrates intricate processes including hand‑stitching, embroidery and dye‑painting, etc., to create soft‑textured three‑dimensional art pieces.

In this episode, in partnership with Bao’an Cultural Center, we invited Kelly Yang, an Indonesian student from Shenzhen University, to the ICH workshop, and learned how to create a cotton sculpture from Xiaolin Luo, the representative inheritor of Guangdong provincial ICH cotton sculpture program.

Cotton sculpture is a form of soft sculpture. Artisans shape cotton to form the basic body mould, then complete multiple sophisticated procedures including hand‑stitching, modelling, embroidery, painting‑dyeing and decorating. More than just a stitching craft, cotton sculpture integrates painting, sculpting and embroidery. It is a comprehensive plastic art with high aesthetic and ornamental value. It was recognized as one of Guangdong Provincial ICH programs in 2018.
Xiaolin Luo is the fourth‑generation representative inheritor of Guangdong Provincial ICH Cotton Sculpture Program. She has created the Dunhuang‑themed figure series, including Bodhisattva and Disciples, Flying Apsaras in Musical Dance, Tubo Princess and Hakka Women. Among them, Bodhisattva and Disciples won the Bronze Award for Folk Crafts at the 5th China Folk Arts Shanhua Award. To pass down this craft systematically, Luo published two books: Chinese Quintessence Art Reader — Cotton Sculpture (2015) and the art collection Beauty Crafted by Devoted Hands (2022). She also delivers cotton‑sculpture workshops in communities and schools, reaching over 100 000 participants.
